Trans-Media Narratives across Multiple Media

According to Techopedia, “Transmedia is commonly defined as a narrative or project that combines multiple media forms.”

Transmedia is the merging of various media forms to share one narrative across. It follows the principles of media convergence wherein similar content is shared across different media. The name itself suggests that Transmedia means “beyond Media”, that is beyond a single medium.
At the most basic level, transmedia stories “are stories told across multiple media. At the present time, the most significant stories tend to flow across multiple media platforms.”

The Digital era has made sharing Trans-media narrative across multiple media easier and it is important to impart content this way because it has a wider-range. Within a few seconds, the same kind of content can be shared on different platforms in text, image, video, audio form or a mixture of it all. Transmedia narrative goes beyond boundaries and is not restricted to just Digital Media or old Media.

The same content that is being printed in a book or newspaper, can be shared in a blog or a pdf. It can further be made into a movie or a YouTube video. It can be shared on Podcasts or Radio. Images of it can also be put up. The benefits of Trans-media content sharing is that it caters to a large population and goes beyond the boundaries of a country to reach a globalised audience.

An example of this is the Harry Potter franchise which exists in the form of books, e-books, movies (in DVDs, Blu-ray) or Digital files of movies, Video games, websites, images, fan videos, merchandise and whatnot. It is a heavyweight narrative brand that expresses itself in different media, languages and business areas.

In creating Trans-media narrative across multiple media, the consumers are also participators of the narrative that help a narrative grow. Trans-media narrative is meant for engagement of the audience. Trans-media narrative requires a high degree of coordination across different media sectors.
