Book Review: The Coercion by Ishan Majumdar

My Rating: 4/5 stars

About this Book:
Two of India’s largest e-commerce corporates … on the brink of bankruptcy
One investment fund … who holds the key to saving only one of them in a completely dried out market
A corporate spy … with a sinister plan to influence this investment decision
A seductress … willing to go to any extent to save her client and destroy its rival
Experience the story of Amaan Sayyed, coming out of retirement after the events of ‘The Celeritas Files’, and returning to the world of corporate intelligence while becoming a key player in, what could be termed as the ugliest corporate war in Indian history … only this time, he faces a powerful adversary who would stop at nothing to bring him down.
A tale of treachery and deceit … where the darkness of monetary greed engulfs every bit of the human soul … where the sound of the conscience is muffled by the desire for professional success

My Review:

Mention of the person as “The youth” time and again annoyed me as soon as I started the first chapter. But after finishing it, I was still intrigued enough to read the second chapter without abandoning it already. Thinking it to be a slight mistake on part of the author, I still appreciated the good build-up for the story.
What I didn’t expect however was for this Indian novel set in a corporate world to turn kinky and include BDSM. Serves me right for never reading the back cover. As soon as Sonya’s character was introduced, I was interested to know more about her. It is hard to find strong female characters in Indian novels, especially ones that are so forthcoming about their plans whether work-related or sexual. Another thing I liked about the book was its real portrayal of the corporate world.

“Nothing. I just thought that referring to them as corporate pimps was a bit…”“Insulting to actual pimps? Yeah, you are right. At least pimps have some honor. They don’t sell crap proclaiming it to be gold.”

The plethora of failed marriages along with the things one must do to keep ahead of the market was all too real and thus, made it a fun read. The book was fast-paced and only got more fun with every new chapter. I got to read both sides of the story whether it was Grocstore or Yourcart. Understanding the functioning of the e-commerce industry was also quite informative but what made the book worth reading was the fact that it was entertaining from beginning to end. I have read novels based on the corporate world before but they weren’t as balanced as this one, giving equal importance to characterization, background story, contemporary economic scenario as well as romantic interests. Would definitely recommend this one.
