Review: The Shannara Chronicles Season 1
The Shannara Chronicles is a Fantasy drama TV series based on The Elfstones of Shannara by Terry Brooks which is the second book in The Original Shannara Trilogy (Add on Goodreads).
Now I prefer reading the books before I start a show or watch the movie adaptation. Blame the reader in me. I like details and to have an insight on the characters and situations.
But in this show, I dove in without reading the book first (I still haven't read it yet and I don't think I will.)
I will, however follow this show to the second season (Please release it soon).
The Shannara Chronicles is set in a magical land where Elves, Gnomes,Trolls exist but humans have been almost wiped out. The ones that survive have to adapt unethical means to survive. Some become Rovers, some Elf Hunters but no one is innocent. The Elves believe magic to have been gone too. Until, there's a threat of Demons raising as their Magical Tree : The Elcrys begins to shed its leaves.
I would say that this show had me hooked from the first episode and I watched it back-to-back.
My eyes wanted to rest and I wanted to watch more. I won by the way. And thus finished the whole season. Just 10 episode of 40-42 minutes. Not a big deal, huh?
I'd say that the premise intrigued me. It's set in future (I think), there were some indications of it, and yet the way everyone carries themselves, and sword fighting and stuff, seems quite medieval. And I liked that. The whole attire, and the forest scenes, horse-riding, sword-fighting, herbs instead of medicines. I enjoyed watching those beautiful sceneries and camera work was fabulous.
Now for the characters, there are 3 Main characters that I'd really like to talk about.
Eretria (The Rover) : Played by Ivana Baquero
She was my favorite throughout, no matter what she did. I liked her better than Amberle anyway. She's a human (a rover) with a past but she's strong and can take care of herself. Even after what she's been through, she nice (not to the face, though). Terribly Rude would be more like it. Her insults, her plans, her awesome attire, that anger, it just made me love her character.
Amberle (The Princess): Played by Poppy Drayton
I might've said this before but I LOVE the look. Princess? More like warrior Princess. Even though I don't like her character very much, I have to say she played her part well. It's just that she doesn't have guts, or brains, or strength. Um, she's just the chosen one so we have to deal with it. Atleast I had to. Some people might even like her character. Not me though. She came off strong in the start, since the first scene in the show is hers. But later, I just grew to dislike her.
Will (The Shannara) :
Here's the halfling, with incredible powers. Nah, just kidding. He's nothing without those elfstones and yet he keeps losing them. Kinda stupid right? I know. I have seen his stupidity throughout the show. I agree, he's generous, kind and caring. He's a good friend. I still found him a weak character.

There were other characters like The Druid, Dagda Mor, etc. that made this show worth watching.
